Digital Storytelling Reflection
The topic of my digital story was “Programming for a general or specific audience”. I chose to present Christmas programs in the library during December 2020. I decided to make it in Spanish and target Spanish-language families (I hope that’s okay!)
What I enjoyed most about this process was putting my Spanish skills to practice. I do not work in a library setting yet, but when I do finally work in the library, I want to be someone who bridges the library to the Spanish-speaking community. I hope to work with the Spanish-speaking/Latinx/Hispanic population. A project like this one, is helping me foster ideas and practice my Spanish language skills so that I can later do community outreach and hopefully bring in more of the Spanish-speaking population to the library.
What was challenging to me about this project was the indecisiveness on the topic. I knew I wanted to create something aimed at Spanish-language/Latinx/Hispanic people, but I was unsure what kind of program promotion I wanted to create. After much thought, I decided to create something aimed at families. Family is a very integral part of Latinx/Hispanic culture. Family ties and family time are very valuable. So creating programs aimed at families will likely be appealing to the Spanish-speaking/Latinx/Hispanic population. I decided to promote Christmas programs simply because of the time of year. It is a major holiday that is coming up that a large majority of the Spanish-speaking/Latinx/Hispanic population celebrate. This does not mean that I will be against promoting other religious or cultural holidays. In the future, I would be happy to create and promote cultural and religious holidays other than Christmas if that is what the community needs. It was tricky- I did not want to be dismissive of Jewish Hispanic/Latinxs, for instance. That was the most challenging part. I hope that promoting projects such as the one I chose is not seen dismissive of Hispanic/Latinxs that do not celebrate Christmas.
